Synagogue at Meroth
A Quppa or Synagogue community treasury was discovered within a concealed niche hewn in a rock within a vaulted storeroom in the foundation of the Merot Synagogue in the Upper Galilee.
The entire hoard comprises 482 gold and copper coins; the earliest is a prutah from the time of Alexander Janneus (78 BCE), and the latest is from the Ayyubid caliphate, dating to 1193 CE, proving that the synagogue was in use until that time.
A few scattered gold coins and a pair of small bronze scales were found outside the niche, suggesting the place was hastily abandoned.
